Charging LiPo batteries

LiPo batteries have very good efficiency. The small size and light weight can store a lot of energy that can be discharged with a high current. The development of LiPo batteries has enabled, for example, the tremendous development of indoor airplanes and EDF airplanes. Previously used NiCd and NiMH batteries were significantly larger and heavier.

Of course, a coin always has two sides.

LiPo batteries are significantly more fire sensitive than previously used NiCd and NiMH batteries.

How to ensure safe use and storage?

  • Do not use a damaged LiPo battery (dispose of safely by recycling)

  • When charging, use the right type of charger with a charging program suitable for the LiPo battery and a balancer that balances the voltage of the cells.

  • Do not charge LiPo batteries in parallel (if the battery of one battery is defective, the intact cells may overcharge and catch fire)

  • Use a charging bag (the only safe way to carry a smoky battery out)

  • Store LiPo batteries in storage voltage in a fireproof box

  • Do not leave LiPo batteries alone for charging!

Charging bags and Pads

It is recommended to use the Charging Pad and or at least the charging bag. There are big differences in charging bags in how well the bags can withstand heat. Cheaper bags last less than more valuable ones. In a LiPo fire, the temperature usually rises really fast.

Higher quality LiPo bags can withstand a temperature of 1200 ° C.

A few words about charging

Always make sure you have selected the correct charging program. PowerPeak chargers have a handy BID system with which the charger automatically detects the correct battery and charging program.

Always use the Balancer connection and the Balancing program when charging. In this case, the charger equalizes the voltages of the cells during charging.

Storing the LiPo battery

If the LiPo Battery is not used for a long time, you should connect the battery to the charger and use the "Storage" storage program. The charger charges the cells to 3.8V storage voltage.

LiPo batteries should be stored in a safe place. A good option is, for example, AkkuSafe 10 or LiPo storage box.

Safe charging and good flights.

Best Regards. Ville
