Robbe Scirocco - The joy and performance of flying

Updated: Jul 8

The Robbe Scirocco range is a familiar name to many gliding enthusiasts, and rightly so. These electric motor gliders, manufactured by German company Robbe Modellsport, represent the highest level of engineering and offer unforgettable flying experiences for amateurs and experienced pilots alike. Scirocco aircraft are designed to deliver outstanding performance in all conditions - whether it's light thermal flight or high-speed gliding in stronger winds.

What is the Scirocco family?

Scirocco models are renowned for their modern GFK/CFK (glass fibre/carbon fibre) shell construction. This combination of materials makes the fuselage and wings exceptionally strong and light, which is crucial for achieving good flight characteristics. The collection comes in a range of sizes to ensure that everyone finds the right option for them:

  • Scirocco XS: A compact and agile little cousin with a wingspan of about 3.25 metres. It is an excellent choice for those looking for a model that is easy to handle and transport without compromising on performance. The XS model also features a redesigned, stronger frame.

  • Scirocco S: With a wingspan of around 3.75 metres, this version offers a good compromise between size and manoeuvrability. The S model is stable in the air and offers a pleasant flying experience.

  • Scirocco L: A classic and a favourite of many! The L version has a wingspan of around 4.0 metres and is an evolved version of the original Scirocco. It is renowned for its excellent gliding characteristics and is ideal for thermal flight.

  • Scirocco XL: The giant of the collection with its 4.5 metre wingspan. The XL version is made for high altitudes and long flights. Its impressive size makes it visible in the air and gives it excellent stability..

Get ready to fly - ARF or PNP?

Robbe Scirocco models are usually available in two different configurations to cater for different enthusiasts:

ARF (Almost Ready to Fly): If you enjoy building and want to customise your machine, the ARF version is for you. These models require you to install the RC components such as the motor, servos and battery yourself. This gives you complete freedom to choose components to suit your own preferences and budget.

PNP (Plug and Play): If you want to get airborne faster, the PNP version is an excellent choice. These models are largely pre-assembled, and often come with motor, servos and wiring. All you need to do is add your own receiver, speed controller and battery, and you're ready to fly!

    Why choose the Robbe Scirocco?

The gliders of the Robbe Scirocco range have earned their reputation for good reason. They are dynamic to fly, well-built and easy to control, making them suitable for pilots of many levels. Whether your goal is casual Sunday surfing in the skies, aerobatics or even competition success, the Scirocco family has a model to meet your needs.

I've flown both the Scirocco XL and Scirocco S, and the feel and behaviour in the air are surprisingly similar. The main difference comes on a windy day: the XL version is a little more challenging to handle on the ground due to its larger wind area. In the air, however, the difference is smaller, and both offer a great flying experience. The performance and durability of these aircraft make them a long-lasting investment in the hobby. The joy and challenge of flying are uniquely combined in this collection.
